*INTRODUCTION*

Harvest Moon can best be described as a unique cross between a role-
playing game (RPG) and a simulation.

Your parents have just gone away and you have a total of two and a half
years to turn their old, decrepit ranch around. Seems simple, right?
Wrong! Just about every day in the game you're busy running back and
forth doing stuff. There's almost not enough time to sleep each night.

Each year has four seasons and each season lasts 30 days. There are no
months in Harvest Moon. Each year is only made up of 120 days. That
gives you 300 game days total. Every 15 seconds that you play the game,
approximately an hour of game time passes. That means that you have
about two minutes and 45 seconds of daytime each game day. After the
sunsets, however, you can keep working as long as you want (the day is
only over when you go to bed). But there are a few problems with
working late into the night. First of all, you can't harvest any of
your crops at night because the shipper comes at about 5:00 p.m., and
anything put in the collection bin after then is sure to rot overnight.
Secondly, you're going to have to make trips to the hot spring to
refresh yourself constantly. If not, you won't be able to do anything
except pick things up. Lastly, if you're married, working late into the
night is sure to cause problems for the marriage.

*SECRETS*

Beanstalk:

In the spring of the second year sell a cow and a man will come by and
offer to trade some beans for it. Say "yes." Then plant the seed at the
summit. The next day climb the beanstalk and you'll see a Golden
Chicken and she'll give you a Golden Egg. The day will automatically
end (Feed your animals first) and you'll now have 10,000 more G.

Rabbit:

You can catch a rabbit from fall to winter near the cave opening. I
don't know anything else about it.

The "Money" Tree:

If you get to the second year with 20,000 G Hawker will come up and
offer to sell you a money tree. If you say "yes." He'll plant it next
to the cow shed but it doesn't grow money it grows bells. You can use
it to call the cows back from the field

Big Foot (maybe):

Go to the springs on the 15th of spring and you'll see a big hairy guy
in them talk to him and he'll say "la-la-la." (As far as I know there is
no point to this in the game)

The Amazing Disappearing Chicken:

Take a chicken to the chicken statue and hit the statue twice. The
chicken will appear on the base for a split-second then disappear. You
can pick it up (where it was when it disappeared) and it'll reappear
again.

The Amazing Disappearing Dog:

There are three ways to do this:

1) Take him to a Festival and he'll reappear next to the bin.
2) Take him down the Dwarf's Well and he'll reappear next to the
bin.
3) Take him to the Chicken House, Pick up a chicken (while still
holding him) and he'll disappear next to the bin.

Double Vision:

When you have a full grown cow and a full grown chicken, take one of
each and put them in the shipping area for livestock then go down to the
livestock dealer. Tell him you want to sell a cow & a chicken then go
back to your ranch. If it worked properly you should have two livestock
dealers, one in front of each other. One of them will buy one of the two
animals while the other one stands there dead as a doorknob.

*FAQs*

Q) How do I exit the town? A little boy is blocking my path?

A) When you first begin the game you are in town. In order to go back
to your ranch you must talk to every one. Be sure to talk to all the
sales people behind the counter.

Q) What's the point of my dog?

A) Your dog serves no purpose in the game other than to warn you when
wild dogs are near. (Wild dogs eat your livestock.)

Q) What's the best way to earn money?

A) The best way to earn money however is with your cows. Your Cattle
Barn should be your first stop in the morning. A handy thing to do is
to have the Brush and Milker in your hands before you go to bed every
night. That way, you won't waste valuable time running to the Tool Shed
in the morning. Once you're in their, brush, milk, talk to, and feed
every one of your cows. This procedure can be really time-consuming
with a full herd of cows. Luckily, time does not pass when you're
inside a building. It does, however, pass outside and in caves. If you
have a full barn of content cows, you can make about 4,200 gold pieces a
day. So make sure you spend time with them. Once you're done with your
cows, move on to your chickens.

Your chicken coop makes the least money out of all the aspects of your
ranch. The most you can make in one day from their eggs is a measly 600
gold pieces. However, selling a chicken gets you 500 gold pieces. This
will reduce the amount you make from eggs, however. After collecting
all their eggs (and placing one in the incubator if you need to), it
shouldn't be past 6:00 a.m.

In the beginning you start off with only 300 G. A good way to increase
this amount is to look in your dresser the first (real) day on your
ranch. (Not the day when you are forced to go into town.) You will
find 1000 GP.

Another way to earn money however is to grow potatoes and corn. Theses
two crops will make you the most money in a season.

VEGETABLE TURNIPS POTATOES TOMATOES CORN
TIME TO HARVEST 4 Days 6 Days 10 Days 13 Days
HARVESTS PER SEASON 7 5 7 6
AMOUNT FROM 8 SQUARES 480 GP 640 GP 800 GP 960 GP
SEASON GROSS 3,360 GP 3,200 GP 5,600 GP 5,760 GP
SEASON NET 1,960 GP 2,200 GP 5,300 GP 5,460 GP

* Tomatoes and corn will keep growing every 3 days if you keep watering
them.
* If it is towards the end of a season grow turnips or tomatoes since
they take the least amount of time to grow.

In the fall and winter you can't grow anything so you should make three
trips to the cave (using the secret entrance) and collect cave herbs.

Q) What's the best shape for planting crops?

A) Before you get the sprinkler you should plant your crops in a box
shape. After you get the sprinkler you should plant them in a fat "U"
shape.

   Box shape Fat "U" shape
        XXX X X
        X X XXX
        XXX XXX

Q) What should I do with rocks?

A) Large rocks you should get rid of. Small rocks you should keep. DO
NOT bash them or throw them in a pond. Instead use them for fences.
They don't break and don't cost anything.

Q) How do I recover my stamina?

A) Eating or jumping in the hot springs will recover your stamina.
Jumping in and out of the hot springs 5 times will restore your stamina
to max.

Q) What should I do during the day? What should I do during the night?

A) (When not married) Daytime is precious, don't waste it. During the
day feed your livestock first thing. This saves time in the long run.
Then make any trips to town. The rest of the day should be spent
picking crops or collecting cave herbs.
During the night you should, plant your crops, water them, scythe grass,
put your livestock in, chop wood, dispose of weeds and other useless
items on your farm, (NOT SMALL ROCKS- use these for fences) and plow the
fields.

(When married) You must do everything in the daytime. So, feed your
livestock, make any trips to town, plant, water and/or collect any
crops. Finally, make sure you bring your wife a present and be home
before 6:00 PM everyday.

Q) Where are all the power berries?

A)
1) Plow your ranch enough to get one berry.
2) Plow even more and get another.
3) Chop trees and you will maybe get one.
4) Break the chicken statue with a hammer, (during the daytime) and you
might find a berry.
5) Do well in the Egg Hunt festival.
6) After the earthquake in winter, chop the tree stump by the pond and
fall in the hole.
7) Catch a fish, and throw it back into the pond.
8) Sell a chicken in the fall, and give it to the Hawker.
9) At the harvest festival, bring a fish or moonberry as your food.
This works out well with the moonberry because it is one of the few
days that it is actually growing!
10) Use the seed of the snow flower at the summit in winter, in front of
the rock.

Q) How do I get the golden equipment and other special items?

Golden Hammer: Breaks a boulder in a single hit

The carpenter will ask if he can borrow your hammer. Answer yes and
when you get it back the hammer will become the golden hammer.

Golden Axe: Cuts down a stump in a single blow.

In the winter an earthquake will hit a boulder opening a new section of
the mountain. Hit the spring with the axe and tell the lady that comes
out no that the gold axe is not yours and she will give you it.

Golden Sickle: Cuts a 3x3 area of grass

During the first summer, lightning will zap a tree. (That was the
strange noise.) Go to the tree on your ranch near the SE side. Enter
the now open stump and talk to all the dwarves. Be sure to tell the
one that asks about your sickle that you like it.

Golden Hoe: Prepares six blocks of soil at a time.

In the fall a dwarf who has collapsed will ask you for a mushroom. If
you give one to him (not a poisonous one) he will give you the golden
hoe.

The Clock: Shows the time.

Just upgrade your house to the Super Log House before the end of the
first summer. This will cost you 5,000 GP and 250 pieces of wood.

Small Charm: Protects against disasters.
You'll get this if you win the egg hunt.

Q) When can I get the sprinkler?

A) The 20th of fall.

Q) Why can't I buy livestock?

A) You don't have enough grass stored in your silo or you don't have
enough grass planted.

Q) Why aren't my chickens laying eggs?

A) You either forgot to feed them or left them out in the rain. Don't
worry thy will start to lay eggs again in 3 days.

Q) How do I hatch an egg?

A) Put an egg in the nest near the lower right hand corner of the
chicken coop. I chick will hatch in 3 days. In another 5-7 (?) days the
chick will become a chicken.

Q) Do I have to feed chicks?

A) No.

Q) Why aren't my cows producing milk?

A) Once you have a cow it will take 21 days of you feeding her, brushing
her, and talking to her, before she will start producing (small) milk.
If you keep doing this she will eventually start to produce a medium
size milk and finally a large size milk.

Q) How do I get a horse?

A) Look on Black Hill during the 1st day of winter

Q) How do I make it through the winter?

A) Make sure to have your Silo stocked with as much fodder as you can
(999 max). Remember each cow and chicken consumes one piece of fodder
each. Just add up your cows and chickens and multiply the number by 30
to find out how much fodder you'll need for the winter. If you're
running low, you can either sell some animals (preferably chickens) or
even buy the packages of food from the Livestock Dealer. He says though,
that it's not as good as real fodder. The packages work just like farm
tools (pick them up and switch to it to use), but they only last a
certain amount of uses. Make sure that you're also throwing the cave
herbs (the only thing that grows year-round) in your produce bin every
day for added cash.

Q) Where's the moonflower?

A) This very rare flower grows only once a year. Search the very top of
the Back Hill between the 10th and the 12th of fall.

Q) Who's the best to marry?

A) That depends. If you are looking to get rich then Eve or Ellen are
both fine choices. If you're looking for a challenge then try Nina.

NOTE: The star's next to the girls' names measures how difficult they
are to marry.

Q) When should I get married?

A) That is totally up to you. If you want to be rich then just blow off
marriage. If you want to be happy then start getting a girl to like you
right away. And if you want to be rich and happy get married during the
second year of the game.

Q) What should I do before I get married?

A) Again this depends but I would suggest upgrading your house to the
Super Deluxe Log House. It will cost you 10,000 GP and 500 pieces of
wood but your wife will have children sooner. Have at least 6 cows, a
full chicken coop, 35,000 GP, and 4 hearts with all the other girls.

Q) How do I propose marriage?

A) First of all, you need to get a girl to really like you. Check her
diary (the book in the back of her house or where she works all the
time) to find out how many hearts you have. When you have about six or
more hearts, you'll probably be able to marry her. She'll also hint
around marriage when she's ready. On Saturday or Sunday, drop by the
Market and buy the Blue Feather for 2,000 GP. Put it in your hand and
give it to her when you're ready. You should be married within a week
if she really likes you and you have the Deluxe Log House

Q) When are all the festivals?

Flower Festival
23rd of spring. The Flower Festival is the first festival you'll
attend. It's also the only festival that takes place while crops are
growing. You don't need to bring anything when you come. Make sure you
feed your animals and harvest any crops you want to sell that day before
you go to the festival (as with most of the others).

Harvest Festival
12th of fall. You're going to have to bring something to the Harvest
Festival to go in your soup. If you can't find anything else, make a
quick trip to the Back Hill for a mushroom.

Egg hunt
20th fall. At the Egg Hunt, there is actually an egg hunt. Someone
will hold up a colored egg in the middle of town, then you have to run
around, opening chests and searching for the correctly colored egg.
When you find the right color, run back to the man and give the egg to
him. He'll award you a point. After a few times, he'll announce the
winner of the contest. If you do well then you will get a power berry.
If you win, you'll acquire a small charm that is supposed to protect
against disasters.

Thanksgiving
10th of winter. If you have enough hearts in a girl's diary when
Thanksgiving comes around, they're sure to bake you a cake. Other than
that, nothing much happens during this festival.

Star Festival
24th of winter. Make sure you find out where your girlfriend is going to
be during the Star Festival the day before. You'll have quite a few
places to choose from when you wake up in the morning.

New Year
1st of spring. At the New Year's Festival, everyone meets at the top of
the Black Hill to watch the first sunrise of the year.
