AMD ships Intel recalls

Intel Corp. is recalling its 1.13MHz Pentium III processor in order to fix a problem that could cause certain applications to freeze. Intel officials said that some 1.13GHz chips showed the problem, but that it will recall and fix all of the processors that have shipped. At the same time Advanced Micro Devices, Monday, announced that its 1.1GHz Athlon chip is available from PC makers. The new chip, for desktops, will be offered in PCs from 10 manufacturers, including Compaq Computer Corp., Gateway Inc., Hewlett-Packard Co. and IBM. PCs using the chip will cost about $2,500, according to AMD. The new Athlon features 256KB of integrated Level 2 cache and a 200MHz bus. It is priced at $853 in 1,000 unit quantities.
