Battlefield 2042 will have an intriguing new gameplay mode in it called Battlefield Portal, which opens up the multiplayer experience to just about anything you can think of. It'll let players craft custom game modes combining weapons, vehicles, and maps from other Battlefield games, with unique rules and team numbers.
"Battlefield™ Portal is a community-driven platform within Battlefield™ 2042 that will let you create and find fantastic experiences made by the series’ creative and passionate community. The creation suite includes Settings, custom modes, and a Logic Editor so you can build your own signature spin on Battlefield’s sandbox; you’ll be able to change team ratios, tweak victory conditions, restrict weapons, and even put different factions from different eras in Battlefield’s history against one another."
In theory, Battlefield Portal would let you have tens of players using world war two rifles faced off against a handful of future-era soldiers with the most modern of weapons. Or have a 128 player all vs all knife fight, or pit modern era fighter jets against a host of world war 2 planes. It's likely to be absolute madness, and that's exactly the plan.
Still, it's possible that we'll see some truly emergent gameplay which could lead to entirely new genres of play.
