Netflix is getting into gaming in a big way

Netflix is the latest big entertainment company that's looking to expand into gaming. It's begun looking for a new executive who's main goal will be to help expand its existing, albeit limited, efforts in the gaming sphere. Although there is no official job title for this position, Reuters is reporting that several major gaming industry heads have been approached to take on the role.

Netflix has dabbled with gaming in the past, releasing games based on Stranger Things series 3, To All the Boys I've Loved Before, and La Casa de Papel. It's also played around with interactive shows like Black Mirror: Bandersnatch. This new gaming endeavour, however, could see Netflix launch its own game streaming service, making games available through the Netflix platform, as well as funding its own standalone releases based on its existing original properties.

"Our members value the variety and quality of our content. It’s why we’ve continually expanded our offering - from series to documentaries, film, local language originals and reality TV," a Netflix spokesperson said in a statement. "Members also enjoy engaging more directly with stories they love - through interactive shows like Bandersnatch and You v. Wild, or games based on Stranger Things, La Casa de Papel and To All the Boys. So we’re excited to do more with interactive entertainment."

if this is something Netflix really wants to throw some weight behind, it's likely it would create its own studio. It will be keenly watching Amazon's efforts in this space, though, which have largely proven ineffective and incredibly costly.

If Netflix did branch out into gaming, what would you like to see from it?
