Report: Square Enix Has Put Deus Ex Series On Hold

Sources close to Square Enix informed EuroGamer that the company might put Dues Ex series on hold due to poor sales of the latest iteration, Deus Ex: Mankind Divided.

If this turns out to be true, it would be a dramatic departure from the company's vision for the "Deus Ex Universe" which was touted prior to Mankind Divided's launch. Back then, Square Enix promised that the Deus Ex Universe would be "an ongoing, expanding and connected game world built across a generation of core games."

"It's a commitment on our part to deliver meaningful content that expands the franchise on a regular basis," said Eidos Montreal boss David Anfossi in 2013. "And to deliver a deep conspiracy that will span several connected Deus Ex games, creating a more immersive and richer experience than ever before."

Being a part of a grand universe, Deus Ex: Mankind Divided left several story threads to be tied in upcoming titles. It is still unclear whether Square Enix intends to keep the rest of the story untold or if it will continue in another format.

Deus Ex: Mankind Divided development took five years and it didn't sell as well as Square Enix was hoping for; It is understandable that the company wouldn't want to risk spending that much time and money again. At least not when they can spend their time working on surefire wins with its recently acquired Marvel games license.
