You can relive the original Scarlet Monastery in WoW's Halloween event

World of Warcraft is giving players the chance to relive an older dungeon as part of its Halloween event. By taking part in the Hallow’s End fight against the Headless Horseman, players can snag themselves a special key which will let them unlock the classic version of the Scarlet Monastery.

If you’re a longtime fan of World of Warcraft, you probably remember the heady days of adventuring in the Scarlet Monastery. Unmlike most WoW dungeons, the Scarlet Monastery was actually four separate instanced dungeons: Armory, Library, Graveyard, and Cathedral. Each had its own dangers and strategies needed, and as a dungeon hub, it was a common destination for many players in the level 30-40 range.

The dungeon was changed way back in patch 5.0.4 of Mists of Pandaria, altering the dungeon and changing it to just two instances, Halls and Monastery. While players could still adventure in the older Scarlet Monastery once World of Warcraft Classic came along, many players would probably have loved to revisit the dungeon with their WoW Retail characters instead. Well, now you can.

To unlock the dungeon, you’ll need to queue for the Hallow’s End fight, and beat the Headless Horseman. Beating the Headless Horseman will reward you with a pumpkin, which can contain a number of items, one of which is a Scarlet Key. Once you’ve got the key, head to the Tirisfal Glades and the Monastery itself to turn it in. When turned in, you get a clickable item which gives you a buff, titled "Retracing the steps of those who came before." Once that’s active, you’ll be able to access all four classic Scarlet Monastery dungeons.

The chance to grab this key from the Headless Horseman disappears on November 1, when the Halloween event ends, but it’s also been pointed out that the Scarlet Key will still be available in-game as a drop from Arcanist Doan even after the event. However, it seems that key can only be looted once per player, so these keys will become a much scarcer resource once the event ends, unless Blizzard makes some changes.
