| The new SCPH-15000 PS2 model, which is currently being sold, looks identical to the original SCPH-10000 on the outside but the new system has been modified so it is not possible anymore to playback Region 1 (North American) DVDs, even with PS2 System Disc version 1.0!
Sony's main reason for releasing the new model has been cost effectiveness, to stop/delay Mod-Chip "pirates" and most likely to fix hardware bugs! |
| Sony PS2 Middleware Expo - New PS2 Hardware! |

| Currently, at Sony's first PS2 Middleware Expo in Japan, developers are showing off their new hardware for the PS2.
Among the featured hardware are 3D Surround Sound, a fully functional USB modem and networking software, which was shown running a web browser and mail client. The on-screen keyboard and PS2 controller are used to access the browser, as this is not very user-friendly Sony is also planning to release a PS2 keyboard! |

| Sanyo Electric has announced that their Liquid Crystal Media-Monitor will accept S-Video and RGB input, making it fully compatible with the PS2. usually these inputs are missing on regular monitors. For now the 1024x768 pixel flat-screen monitor will only be available in Japan for ¥ 98000 / US$ 930. |

| Sony Fights Back against Mod-Chip Pirates |
|
| Sony want to try to stop future piracy by announcing that they will replace the current PS2 model SCPH10000 for a new model, the SCPH15000. This new model will have slightly changed internal PS2 hardware to fight back against pirates and Mod-Chip development.
The new PS2 SCPH15000 will start shipping next month, so hurry out to get yourself a "Modable" PS2. But most likely this is just a temporary fix as, until now, no console system has been save from pirates hacking around in it! |
| Sony unveils Japanese HDD |
|
Sony officially announced its external Hard Drive/Broadband Modem add-on for the Japanese PS2. Their previous announcement was for the American version of the PS2.
The device, named HDD, connects to the PlayStation 2 via the PC Card port on the back of the system (this port was removed in the American version), and allows gamers to connect to a broadband internet connection (cable modem, DSL, for T-level) as well as store data on a hard drive of an undetermined capacity! several gigs of data on the hard drive. |

| At a Sony press conference in Tokyo, Ken Kutaragi (president of SCE) detailed the latest numbers in PS2 production and game development. Sony expects to have shipped 2.4 million PS2 units in Japan by the end of July, undershooting their original goals. Some analysts point to the development of PSone and the shortage of motherboard hardware as possible causes for this.
Sony also mentioned that there are currently 389 PlayStation 2 titles in development around the world. They also confirmed that they plan to ship 3 million PS2s in both Europe and North America by the end of this fiscal year (Spring 2001)! |

|
Sony has made an official announcement, and released pictures of its online PS One.
The 32-bit PS One will have the facility to get online with a mobile phone. Practically on the verge of release - Japan will see the hardware on store shelves in less than a month and across PAL territories in September this year. |

| Sony has officially unveiled its plan to release a Hard Disk Drive Unit (HDD) for PS2 in Japan this winter.
The HDD box connects to the PC Card terminal and will include a large capacity Harddrive and features a high-speed Ethernet network interface for connections to broadband network infrastructures (like Cable Modems or DSL). |

| Yet another Mod-Chip has been released in Hong Kong, the nice thing about this one is that it can play PS2 backups without swapping the CD!
Also a 8-wire PS2 Mod-Chip is currently being sold at Lik-Sang for only USD 25. This one needs to swap CD's. They also have the first PS2 Remote Control available. It hooks up to the Joypad Port/Memory Card slot and can be used to control the DVD player!

| Currently there is a new PS2 Mod-Chip available in Hong Kong, it is not the same as the PS2 Mod-Chip we talked about on the 29th of May. It is based around a 16 pin PIC chip with 9 wires which need to be soldered onto the PS2 mainboard. When you insert the System/Utility Disc it automatically opens the tray, then you have 3 seconds to replace it for a backup CD before it closes the tray and starts the game. |

| Sony of Japan has announced their future plans in PS2 manufacturing. It announced that they are planning to spend 125 billion yen (1.16 billion dollars) to enhance some of the PS2's chips such as the Emotion Engine and graphics synthesizer. According to Sony's plan, they will be spending an extra 23 billion yen to boost production at their current chip plants. On top of that, they will also be spending an extra 67.5 billion yen to build new chip plants and 34.5 billion yen to reinforce their LSI plant. Sony president Ken Kutaragi has plans to increase the PS2 output to 1.4 million per month (it is only at 500,000 now). They will increase it once again to 2.2 million per month once the new plant is up and running around April 2001. |
