Toshiba licenses new MIPS processor technology |
26-01-1999
IGN PSX |
| Toshiba has become one of the first two companies (the other being fellow industry giant NEC) to license the latest core processor technology under development by semiconductor powerhouse MIPS Technologies, Inc. If you've studied up on your console internals, you'll remember that MIPS processors drive both the PlayStation and Nintendo 64.
Code-named "Ruby" this 64-bit processor will be made available in the year 2000 (the year which, consequently, PlayStation 2 is expected to make its retail debut) and feature special operations intended specifically for crunching large amounts of 3D related data; graphics geometry processing, high-performance integer and floating-point calculations, and the like. Inclusion in next-generation game consoles and set-top boxes has already been alluded to in regards to the chip's intended purpose. |

7-Wire MOD-Chip to combat the "anti-Mod" Games |
22-01-1999
REI |
| REI (Reversed Engineering Inc) has decided to return to the more reliable 7-wire version of the modchip, a version that was not popular due to having more wires. In preparation for "anti-Mod" games, the hardware reset and door switch signals will be brought back, as well as the external clock. This allows flexible control over startup of the modchip and allows the chip to be "put to sleep" when it is not needed. |
|
|
| To counteract the recent protected PSX games a new type of ModChip has been developed which can enable/disable the ModChip whenever you want. |
| It uses the SCPH-7000 4-wire ModeChip, a switch is connected to pin 5 & 6 which is used to enable/disable the ModChip.
When you try to load a protected game you first turn on the ModChip and turn it off after the white screen disappears. |

Sony stops protecting Games in Japan |
20-01-1999
PSX Japan |
The just released PoPoRogue has been recalled as the game failed to run on older PSX systems (SCPH-1000). It seems that the SCEI protection things that there is a ModChip installed even when there is none there! Because of this I.Q Final won't have a protection.
Currently protected PSX games:
| PROTECTION |
GAME |
| SCEI |
PoPoRogue (1st edition) & I.Q Final (Trial version) |
| SCEE |
MediEvil |
| SCEA |
none |
When you try to play these games on a "Modded" PSX a red hand/circle "stop" icon appears and the game will halt. |
