Larian won't make Baldur's Gate 3 DLC or Baldur's Gate 4

If you're a Baldur's Gate 3 superfan who's eagerly awaiting more story content, bad news has come out of the annual Game Developers Conference (GDC). Larian Studios founder Swen Vincke has stated the studio won't be creating any new content for Baldur's Gate 3, and won't be looking to move into development of Baldur's Gate 4, either.

News in brief

  • No DLC for Baldur's Gate 3, and no sequel too
  • Tried to make DLC, and failed to make it work
  • Plan is to leave D&D-inspired games behind completely

Baldur's Gate 3 has been an enormous smash hit, so it seemed a given that we would soon be seeing DLC for it landing, along with potential expansions as well. Heck, surely Larian must be looking to follow-up on its success with a sequel, Baldur's Gate 4, right? Unfortunately not, Larian is done with Dungeons & Dragons, and is planning to move on.

"Baldur’s Gate will always have a warm spot in our hearts. We’ll forever be proud of it, but we’re not going to continue in it" said studio founder, Swen Vincke. "We’re not going to make new expansions, which everybody is expecting us to do. We’re not going to make Baldur’s Gate 4, which everybody is expecting us to do. We’re going to move on. We’re going to move away from D&D, and we’re going to start making a new thing."

Interestingly, he also stated the studio tried to make DLC, but gave up because it turned out to not be what they are interested in as a studio. And really, that's definitely the best option. Part of the joy of Baldur's Gate 3 is the sheer amount of depth on offer in the game, and the love from the development is evident in the final product. If that love is likely to be missing from any DLC, then it's better Larian bops it on the head, rather than continue and potentially sour a game with as much love as Baldur's Gate 3. Considering how good a job Larian Studios did with Baldur's Gate 3, we can be sure we'll be keeping a close eye on whatever it has planned next.
